BIOGRAPHY

 Ugo Guagliardo is one of Europe’s most-requested basses for the Belcanto, Classical, and Baroque repertory.  Admired for his elegant singing, richly timbred voice, and protean acting abilities, he has won acclaim as a Rossini specialist while garnering equal praise for his interpretations of Mozart, Bellini, Donizetti, and early music.

He has performed at Opernhaus in Zurich, the Salzburg Festival, the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, the Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie of Brussels, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, Rossini Opera Festival of Pesaro, the Opera Royale de Versailles, the Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Grand Théâtre of Geneva,  Tokyo’s Bunkamura Theatre.

Mr. Guagliardo’s debut at the Salzburg Festival in the summer of 2014, where he shared the stage once again with Cecilia Bartoli in Rossini’s La Cenerentola and was singled out by critics for his lithe, virtuosic singing in the role of Alidoro (Opera News).

Equally at home in Rossini’s serio and buffo roles, Mr. Guagliardo’s Rossini credits include Assur in Semiramide; Lord Sidney in Il viaggio a Reims; Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia; Blansac in La scala di seta; Le Gouverneur in Le Comte Ory; Walter in Guillaume Tell and Alidoro in La Cenerentola. His Belcanto repertoire encompasses Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor , Giorgio in I Puritani, Goffredo in Il Pirata , and Talbot in Maria Stuarda .  As a Mozart singer, Mr. Guagliardo has performed the roles of Masetto at La Monnaie in Bruxelles, Figaro, Don Giovanni, Leporello, Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte, Publio in La clemenza di Tito …

In demand as an interpreter of Baroque repertoire and early music, Mr. Guagliardo has collaborated frequently with Europe’s foremost early music specialists and period instrument orchestras.  His repertoire includes the bass roles of Handel (Messiah with the Zurich Kammer Orchestra, Rodelinda at Opera Rara in Krakow, Giulio Cesare with Jean-Claude Malgoire at the Royal Opera of Versailles, and Agrippina with Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante), Vivaldi (Motezuma), Scarlatti (Serpollo e Serpilla), Veracini’s Adriano in Siria in Krakow and at the Wiener Konzerthaus with Fabio Biondi and Europa Galante; Cavalli (Gli amori di Apollo e Dafne in a production by Pierluigi Pizzi, as well as a recording for Naxos) and Monteverdi (Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria and as Seneca in L’incoronazione di Poppea at Milan’s MiTo festival).

More recent performances include Cavalli’s Serse conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm in Lille, Caen and in Vienna; Lucia di Lammermoor in Avignon; La Cenerentola at the Israeli Opera and Teatro dell’Opera di Roma; Il barbiere di Siviglia at Opera di Firenze and Teatro San Carlo of Naples; and Alidoro in La Cenerentola at the Semperoper of Dresden and the Opéra du Rhin (Strasbourg) under the musical direction of Enrique Mazzola, a reprise of the role of Osroa in Veracini’s Adriano in Siria at Valencia’s Palau de la Música, Colline in La Bohème at Opéra Grand Avignon, Morte e resurrezione di Cristo (Caldara) in Madrid and in Cuenca, Le Toreador in Palermo and Banco in Macbeth in Bari.

 A native of Palermo, Mr. Guagliardo received degrees in Philosophy from the Università di Palermo and in both Piano and Voice from the Conservatory “Vincenzo Bellini” of Palermo.  Mr. Guagliardo has collaborated with conductors such as Gianandrea Noseda, Alberto Zedda, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Marc Minkowski, Michele Mariotti, Jean-Claude Malgoire, Enrique Mazzola, Fabio Biondi, and Jean-Christophe Spinosi.

 He can be heard on Decca recordings of I Puritani and Le Comte Ory and the Naxos recordings of Rossini’s Otello and La scala di seta, Pacini’s Don Giovanni, Mercadante’s Don Chisciotte, and Cavalli’s Gli amori di Apollo e Dafne, as well as on recordings for the Ermitage, Kicco Music, and Bongiovanni labels.
