BIOGRAPHY

Lucia Cirillo’s impressive career as an opera singer began by winning several important competitions such as the Concorso per Giovani Cantanti Lirici d’Europa  “As.Li.Co” and the prestigious Concorso Internazionale “Toti Dal Monte”. Initially, in addition to her substantial work in classical guitar, Cirillo studied singing with Adelisa Tabiadon and John Janssen.  She continued with Bruno De Simone and Regina Resnik to refine her operatic repertoire, and with Conrad Richter and Dunja Vejzovic to develop her sensibility for German Lieder.

She made her debut in Il cappello di paglia di Firenze by Nino Rota.  Shortly after, she sang the title role in La belle Hélène by Jacques Offenbach, and the role of Idamante in Idomeneo by Mozart on the Circuito Lirico Lombardo and Toscano.

From that point her voice took her to the most important European halls, theatres and festivals, such as Concertgebouw Amsterdam, the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, the Chopin Festival in Warsaw, the Glyndebourne Festival, the Mozart Festival in La Coruña, the Salzburg Festival, and La Fenice in Venice, La Scala in Milan, the Paris Opera, the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, the Teatro Regio in Turin, the Teatro Massimo in Palermo  (where she has recently sang the lead role in Orphée et Eurydice by Gluck-Berlioz), the Teatro Real in Madrid, and the Vlaamse Oper in Antwerp.

Her expansive repertoire moves from the Baroque (Ariosti, Cavalli, Jommelli, Leo, Monteverdi, Pergolesi, Rameau, Vinci, Veracini, Vivaldi) including Handel (Ariodante, Dardano, Piacere, Sesto), to Mozart (Annio, Cherubino, Dorabella, Idamante, Sesto), to Rossini (Angelina, Isolier, Rosina) and Bellini (Adalgisa, Romeo).  It also extends through composers like Musorgskij (Feodor in Boris Godunov), Prokofiev (Sméraldine in L’amour des trois oranges) and Strauss.

Beyond her versatility, Cirillo is celebrated for the sensuality, dynamism and technical precision of her singing and acting.  She has worked with world-renowned conductors including Fabio Biondi, Sylvain Cambreling, Ottavio Dantone, Diego Fasolis, Daniele Gatti, Vladimir Jurowski and Alexander Lazarev, and stage directors such as David Alden, Hugo de Ana, Robert Carsen, Sir Peter Hall and Pierluigi Pizzi.

Cirillo regularly performs with the most important European Baroque orchestras, from “Europa Galante” to “Accademia Bizantina”, “Il Giardino Armonico” and “I Barocchisti”.  In addition, she has recorded significant audio and video projects for Decca, Deutsche-Grammophone, FraBernardo, OpusArte, TDK, Vivaldi Edition-Naïve.

Upcoming and last performances include:  Gluck’s Orphée et Eurydice in Palermo, Teatro Massimo; Sarro’s Achille in Sciro in Naples, Teatro San Carlo; Mozart’s Così fan Tutte, Dorabella, in Ravenna and Piacenza; Handel’s Trionfo del Tempo e del Disinganno, il Piacere, at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano; Vivaldi’s Orlando Furioso, Alcina, in Festival Valle d’Itria; Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Donna Elvira, at the Opéra de Lausanne.
