Hailed by audiences and critics for his magnificent voice and stage presence, Italian bass Ildebrando D’Arcangelo has established himself as one of the most exciting singers of his generation. D’Arcangelo is well-known to audiences throughout Europe as well as North America.
He won the prestigious Premio Abbiati in 2002 and he has been awarded with the title of “Kammersänger” at the Vienna Staatsoper in 2014.
Thanks to his musicianship and the psychological insights of his interpretations he has attracted the attention of many leading conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Chailly, Myung-Whun Chung, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Daniele Gatti, Valery Gergiev, Bernard Haitink, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Christopher Hogwood, René Jacobs, Riccardo Muti, Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Seiji Ozawa, Antonio Pappano, and the late Sir Georg Solti.
D’Arcangelo was born in Pescara, Italy and began his vocal training under Maria Vittoria Romano and continued in Bologna at Paride Venturi. He started his career as a prizewinner of the international Toti Dal Monte Competition 1989 in Treviso where he sang his first role Masetto in Don Giovanni and later Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte. Since then, he has sung in all important opera houses of the whole world including the Met, Scala, ROH Covent Garden, Vienna State Opera, Opéra in Paris, Lyric Opera Chicago, Liceu in Barcelona, Munich State Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Berlin State Opera, San Francisco Opera, Berlin Deutsche Oper and the Salzburg Festival.
His wide-ranging repertoire includes works by Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Berlioz, Bizet, Verdi, Boito and Stravinsky.
D’Arcangelo’s vast discography on Cd and DVD include recitals and operas for the most prestigious labels. For Deutsche Grammophon he recorded both title roles of Don Giovanni and Nozze di Figaro, Elisir d’Amore, Anna Bolena, Handel & Mozart solo albums. For Decca he recorded Carmen and Puritani and Rossini’s Stabat Mater for Warner Classics. He appears on Verdi Requiem both with V. Gergiev and G. Dudamel. All recordings have won unanimous critical praise.
