Deborah York, Born in Sheffield, Deborah graduated from Manchester University with a first class honours degree in music. She has established a reputation as one of the finest singers specialising in baroque and classical repertoire.
Deborah appears regularly as guest soloist with symphony orchestras and baroque ensembles throughout Europe as well as Japan, Hong Kong, Russia, Australia, the USA and Argentina, working with conductors such as Bernard Haitink, Hervé Niquet, Roy Goodman, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Philippe Herreweghe, Ton Koopman, Rene Jacobs, Marc Minkowsky, Rinaldo Alessandrini, Christophe Rousset, Ivor Bolton, Sir Charles MacKerras, Paul McCreesh and Marcus Creed.
Deborah’s operatic career has taken her to Covent Garden, Glyndebourne, Teatro Colon in Buenos Aires, Sydney Opera House and Tel Aviv Opera in operas by Monteverdi, Mozart, Gluck, Britten, Handel, Purcell, Stravinsky and Donizetti. She has appeared regularly at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich creating the roles of Lucia in Britten’s ‘Rape of Lucretia’, Oberto in Handel’s ‘Alcina’, Almirena in Handel’s ‘Rinaldo’ and Amore in Gluck’s ‘Orphee’, recorded live for cd and dvd. She sang Belinda in Purcell’s ‘Dido and Aeneas’ at the Berliner Staatsoper, broadcast by Arte, and Anne Truelove in Stravinsky’s ‘The Rake’s Progress’ at the Semperoper in Dresden.
Her extensive discography includes recordings of J.S.Bach with Philippe Herreweghe for Harmonia Mundi, with Ton Koopman for his complete cantatas series and the Matthäus Passion with McCreesh for Deutsche Grammophon. In 2000 she received a Grammy Award for Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress recorded for DG with the London Symphony Orchestra and John Eliot Gardiner. Deborah’s latest solo cd of baroque Christmas music ‘Per il santissimo natale’ with baroque orchestra Elbipolis Hamburg is a co-production between Edel Classics and Deutschland Radio Kultur.
Deborah gives masterclasses at the Moscow Conservatoire, Royal College-London, Royal Northern College-Manchester and teaches from her studio at home in Berlin. Forthcoming engagements include ‘Messiah’ with Orchesta di Padova e del Veneto and Reinhard Goebel, Matthäus Passion with the Nederlandse Bachvereniging and Jos van Veldhoven and a recital of Purcell songs with English lutenist Elizabeth Kenny - ‘If music be the food of love’.
